Liberty Hill sits where the Blackland Prairie gives out and the limestone starts. West of the 183 corridor the ground is thin soil over rock, the lots get bigger, and the wind comes across them from the south and west with little to slow it down. A cedar fence out here dries fast, which is good for stain and hard on bare wood: the surface checks early, and the gray comes in one summer instead of two.
Most of what we quote in Liberty Hill is builder fence. Santa Rita Ranch, Orchard Ridge and the newer phases along 29 are still under construction, and every house comes with a new cedar privacy fence and no instructions. New cedar has a window: 4–8 weeks after install it can take stain, and after one full summer bare it has lost the color you were trying to keep.

Santa Rita Ranch is the anchor: a large master-planned community still building, with a lot of new cedar going up every year and going gray on the same clock. Orchard Ridge and Butler Farms are the same story on a smaller scale. Rancho Santa Fe, Stonewall Ranch and Northgate Ranch are the older, bigger-lot side of Liberty Hill, where one property can carry more fence than a whole cul-de-sac in Santa Rita, and much of it has never been stained.
The Santa Rita Ranch clock: new cedar, four to eight weeks
A new cedar fence comes out of the mill wet. Stain it in the first two weeks and the stain sits on the surface and wears off; wait a year and every picket has gone silver and you are paying for a brightener before you pay for stain. The window is 4–8 weeks after install, shorter in July when the wood dries faster.
If you closed in the last two months, put the install or closing date in the quote form and we book the spray for the week the wood is ready. If you are already past a summer, the fence is not ruined; it is a restoration instead of a plain stain, and we say which one you have when we quote it.
Rancho Santa Fe and Stonewall Ranch: long runs on rock
The older Liberty Hill neighborhoods are on acreage or close to it. A Rancho Santa Fe lot can run several hundred feet of fence, often 6-foot cedar privacy near the house and shorter cedar or ranch rail at the property line. Two things follow. The footage alone puts most of these past the middle of our range, and we say so in the quote. And the posts are set in limestone, not clay, so they stay put; what fails is the pickets, which check and cup from sun and wind long before the posts move.
We stain rail and privacy fence on the same visit and quote them as separate lines; three-rail cedar has a fraction of the surface of a privacy panel and the number reflects that.
West wind and full sun: why the whole fence fades here
In a shaded Austin yard the north run keeps its color a year longer than the south. Liberty Hill mostly does not have a north run in that sense. The lots in Santa Rita Ranch and Orchard Ridge were pasture until recently, the surviving live oaks are well away from the fence line, and the wind crosses the fence from the open side. The fence grays on every side at close to the same rate.
That changes the tone decision more than the schedule. Dark walnut on a west-facing Liberty Hill fence runs hot and fades fast; natural cedar and honey run cooler and lose color more gracefully.
HOA tones in Santa Rita Ranch, Orchard Ridge and Butler Farms
Most ARCs in Santa Rita Ranch, Orchard Ridge and the other managed communities in Liberty Hill approve natural cedar, honey and brown tones and reject reds, blacks and anything that reads as paint. Confirm with yours; the written standards differ and get revised. Rancho Santa Fe and Stonewall Ranch may not have an ARC step at all, so check your covenants. Name the community in the form and we send the swatch and product name the application wants; if a neighbor's approved fence is the color you are after, we match it. What Liberty Hill fences usually cost
A typical Santa Rita Ranch lot carries roughly 150 to 220 linear feet of 6-foot privacy fence, much of it shared. Builder cedar still in its window, stained one side in natural cedar, lands in the lower half of our range. The same fence a year later, gray and needing brightener, moves to the upper half. Rancho Santa Fe and Stonewall Ranch lots with several hundred feet of privacy and rail fence run past the top, and the quote says so up front.
